L. RON HUBBARD: HOW HIS WORK HAS INFLUENCED THE WORLD

THE BREAKTHROUGH IN EDUCATION

In the mid-1960s, Mr. Hubbard’s researches into the field of education resulted in the release of a series of breakthrough techniques of study. Used routinely by parishioners in churches of Scientology throughout the world, these methodologies spread rapidly to tutoring programs and educational projects in many countries. The impact of these discoveries has had far-reaching consequences in providing an answer to the crisis in education.

The failure of our educational systems began with the introduction of experimental psychology into classrooms during the 1950s and continued with the gradual transformation of schools from institutions of learning to centers for therapy.

The fact that Johnny could no longer read and write became less important than how Johnny felt about being illiterate. The 3 R’s were soon being replaced by “Values Education,” “Self-Esteem Training,” and “Outcome-Based Education,” and our educational statistics crashed.

The statistics are frightening; they represent a picture not just of students discouraged by the system, but also turning into criminals. By the early 1990s, as many as 100,000 students were bringing guns to class every day. Juveniles accounted for 17 percent of all violent crime arrests. The number of children arrested for murder increased by 85 percent between 1987 and 1991. Justice Department estimates found that nearly one million young people between twelve and nineteen were being robbed, raped or assaulted by their peers. And of the juvenile offenders arrested, 85 percent were illiterate. In other words, those perpetrating the dangerous conditions in schools were the very same ones the educational system had failed.
