CRIMINON
Rehabilitating a Sense of Responsibility
Headquartered in Los Angeles, Criminon operates programs across the United States. By the start of 1998, 4,000 inmates in 750 prisons were being helped weekly, up from 200 prisons just four years earlier. Such expansion has not been limited to prisons. In Los Angeles, Criminon initiated a remarkably successful program in Central Juvenile Hall among youngsters who were gang members charged with serious crimes. The supervising detention officer wrote, The results of the program well exceeded our expectations in my unit, and I would therefore recommend Criminon to any corrections facility.
Small wonder then that the program is spreading. A southern California municipal court judge has sentenced more than five hundred misdemeanor offenders to Criminon instead of to jail. In his words, The efficacy of Criminon has far surpassed even our most optimistic expectations. We have seen a significant increase in compliance with all terms and conditions of probation, restitution, fine payments and community service for those who have completed the program.
Compliance approximates 90 percent. Additionally of great significance is the reduction of recidivism. Less than 1 percent of those who have completed the program have reoffended. Because of its success, this courts referral approach is gaining more and more popularity. Additionally, Criminon has become active in other locations around the world, ranging from Australia to England and Hungary to Mexico.
